I do not think there is one “best” HEIC to JPG converter for every person. I use three categories depending on whether I am on my laptop, someone else’s locked-down PC, or offline with a huge archive.

This page is the roundup. For a longer “what I actually use day to day” take, see online vs desktop — honest comparison.

What I look for first

  1. Privacy — Local browser decode vs upload-to-cloud.
  2. Batch size — Can it handle 80 files without dying? 800 may need chunks.
  3. Output — JPG default; PNG/WebP when needed.
  4. Friction — Drag-drop, no account, no watermark on family photos.

Speed matters less than “did it corrupt my only copy of the wedding shot.”

1. Browser-based converter (this site)

Good for: Quick free jobs, Windows without Store access, helping relatives remotely.

  • HEIC to JPG in the tab — JPG, PNG, WebP, quality slider
  • Processing on-device in supported browsers
  • Batch within RAM limits

Weak spot: Very large batches on 8GB RAM machines — split into sessions (batch guide).

I built this because I kept sending people links that uploaded their camera roll to who-knows-where.

2. Desktop apps (CopyTrans HEIC, iMazing, XnConvert, etc.)

Good for: Offline thousands of files, repeatable folder workflows.

Weak spot: Install, updates, sometimes paid features. Overkill for twelve files.

I keep one desktop tool installed for airplane-mode archives. Daily life stays in the browser.

3. Cloud converters (CloudConvert and similar)

Good for: Odd formats, one file, when you trust the service.

Weak spot: Upload required. I will not use these for private family albums. Fine for a stock image or a public asset.

4. OS built-ins

iPhone / Mac: “Most Compatible” camera format exports JPEG from the start. Or convert on export when sharing.

Windows: HEIF extensions from the Microsoft Store help view HEIC; they do not replace batch convert heic to jpg for uploads. Details: Windows HEIC.

What I recommend in practice

  • Default: Browser converter on your own machine — try here.
  • Stuck on someone else’s PC: Same link, no install.
  • 2,000+ files, no Wi-Fi: Desktop.
  • Need to compare philosophy, not brands: Online vs desktop article.

“Best” is the one you can run today on the hardware in front of you without uploading photos you would not post publicly.
